Attention: Bike Technology Events Are A Go!

-

Bike technology is a go!

After the 2015 Atlanta Cycling Festival, we had a team meeting to discuss what went well and where/how we can improve future ACFs.

After much discussion, we kept coming back to our "big idea": We want the ACF to be the SXSW for bikes in Atlanta - Where people come to Atlanta for the week for bike rides, bike advocacy, bike art, bike technology, bike films, bike music and consumer focused-bike-everything.

Looking at the team, it was clear that we needed to hire some amazingly talented people. Fast. And we did - We hired a Bike Art Director and the (first ever) Bicycle Technology Director (more on them in the future). Once we found the talent, it was clear that they would need a budget.

And that's the purpose of this post: We've found our premier Bike Technology Sponsor - Wahoo Fitness.

Thanks to Wahoo, we've got the initial budget to build out some fantastic bike technology events. Events that have never, ever been done before in Atlanta. Think bike powered machines with 3D mapping lights, digital bike lanes, bike technology meetups and a whole lot more.

What's even cooler: Wahoo Fitness wants to hire local Atlanta talent to help grow their company (See their jobs here). That's right - An Atlanta based bike technology company is purposefully looking to hire technologically talented bicyclists in Atlanta. That's ridiculously fantastic.

So. Stay tuned. The 2016 Atlanta Cycling Festival is going to be grand. We can't wait for you to attend.

P.S. Interested in sponsoring the 2016 ACF? We're looking for few more awesome thought-leaders in art and tech. Check out ourSponsor The Festival page for more info.

The 2015 Atlanta Cycling Festival Officially Official Numbers And Analysis

-
Let's just get this out of the way: The 2015 Atlanta Cycling Festival was a kickstandin', pedal pushin' success!

Indeed, from what we've heard during the festival and through our follow-up surveys, it was a week of, "Bicycle magic in Atlanta, GA."

We've compiled the numbers, data, monies and a lot more. Here's how the 2015 ACF shaped-up.

1. We Got New (And Kept) Sponsors!
From 2014 to 2015, we had a 75% sponsor retention rate! That means that awesome folks like Tube Creative, New Belgium Brewing, WABE, Scoutmob, Snyder Cycles, The Spindle and Zipcar liked/believed in us/our mission

What's more, we developed some awesome new sponsors. Some favs: Bond Intelligent Health, Podiumwear, MACC, MBIKES, Hypepotamus and more. Here's the complete list of the 2015 Atlanta Cycling Festival Sponsors. Support them because they believe in Atlanta and biking. We think that's best mix ever.

2. We Grew By 48.54%
Sure, we could round up and call it 50% growth, but we really like significant figures. This makes us excited because we held more events in 2015 than 2014 (specifically, more on each weeknight, not in one sum). This tells us that, yes, if you hold events, more people will come. This also means that there are more cyclists coming out to events than last year. AKA - The biking community is growing in Atlanta!

3. We Gave Back Over $3,742.38 To The Community
Built into the ACF model is making sure that with everything we do, we give back. From links to rides, tickets, swag and beer sales, everything has a built-in mechanism to give back to the community that supports us. Where did the money go? It went to fantastic orgs/ideas, like the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, Living WallsMetro Atlanta Cycling Club and many more.

4. We Helped Start A Bicycle Delivery Business In Areas Lacking Fresh Markets
Not only did we give the money above, but we also awarded The ACF Create Grant - A $2,000 grant to start a bike business/idea in Atlanta, GA. The winner of this year's grant: Carver Neighborhood Market. Jeff Delp and his fantastic team at CNM used the money to employ neighborhood kids to deliver groceries, by bike, to residents in areas lacking access to fresh food. We think that's rad.

5. We Still Made Money
Despite incorporating "giving back" into our financial model, the ACF still came out net positive. That means we have money in the bank to start building out awesome programs/rides/events for ACF 2016! We've got a list of, oh, 3,762 potential ideas.

6. We Helped Prove (Again) That Atlanta Is Becoming A Biking City
As we stated, we grew. We think that's because there are more and more bicyclists in Atlanta. We found them, and they found us. And we're pretty sure that those numbers will continue to grow. We love Atlanta and firmly believe that she's on the cusp of huge biking-things, especially in the next 3 years.

From the talented and handsome Matthew Mammola, here's our 2015 Atlanta Cycling Festival Wrap-Up video. Grab some earphones, a tissue and relive that 2015 ACF.

And with that, we're done. For now. Within the next few months, we'll start planning the 2016 Atlanta Cycling Festival. With all the fantastic things going on in Atlanta, we can't wait. ACF 2016 is going to be awesome. Stay tuned.

Until then...

Much Bike Love,
The ACF Team

Here's How You Can Sponsor The 2015 Atlanta Cycling Festival

-

Sponsor The 2015 Atlanta Cycling Festival

We’re starting to get excited over here at The Atlanta Cycling Festival! Why? In less than 90 days, we’ll be kicking off the 2nd annual Festival. Last year, we had 2,000 + cyclists for the week and over 32 events all over the city. This year, there’s going to be more. A lot more. Think bike demos, more parties, chances to win some great gear, bike volunteering and bike business creation.

If you haven’t marked off June 13th – June 20th on your calendar, you need to do that, well, right now.

We have four Sponsorship Levels:

  • The Little Ring ($100)
  • The Big Ring ($250)
  • Drivetrain ($1,000)
  • The Whole Bike ($2,500)

With each of these levels comes some great perks. Our favorite is at the Big Ring and Drivetrain Level where you/your brand get to host a ride/event! Great exposure and access to your "market" - If that market is thousands of awesome cyclists that care about what they wear, eat, drink and their lovely city of Atlanta.

Read About The Sponsorship Levels

#2: Get Vendor/Booth Space At Our Opening and Closing Expo/Parties
The Festival is bookended by the Opening Bash and Closing Bash. We structure these parties to incorporate an "expo" like feel, where cyclists are exposed to bike vendors, bike companies, bike orgs and more. At both Bashes, you can sell you goods (clothes, gear, memberships, ride registration, etc) all while enjoying a New Belgium Beer.

The pricing is extremely low-barrier (we did this purposefully) - $45 for a 9'x9' space. If you're looking for great access to your target demographic, you want to be at both of these parties.

Got more questions? No problem! Email us at twowheelsgood {at} atlantacyclingfestival dot com.

See you in less than 90 days!

2017 Atlanta Cycling Festival Dates Announced

-

We'll just get this out of the way:

The 4th Annual Atlanta Cycling Festival is proud to announce the official 2017 dates: Saturday, June 10 - Saturday, June 17.

As a friendly reminder of what you can expect, check out our 2016 Wrap Up Video from our fantastic videographer: Matthew Mammola

Never being satisfied with "let's just do the same thing again," the ACF team has been hard at work planning and scheming on how to make this year's Festival even better.

Here's a preview of a few ideas that we have planned:

  • Concrete Jungle Fruit Tree Exploration Explosion Expedition: While the name is a working title, we're elated to work with the awesome team at Concrete Jungle. This bike tour is one of a kind and will be full of surprises - And homemade plumb wine, we hear.
  • The Most Adorably Aggressive Children's Bicycle Race Of Doom: Again, working title (We're really good at these, right?), but we plan on hosting the most adorable and aggressive 4-10 yr bicycle race ever in Atlanta. Get your kids ready - There will be awesome prizes, snacks and juice boxes.
  • 2X The Ramps = 100X The Fun MTB Pump Track: We're stoked to have REI and Clif Bar as sponsors again this year. They'll be at several events, culminating with combining both of their MTB pump tracks. It's going to be marvelously large and fun to ride.
  • Bicycle Speed Dating: It's back! Looking for love on two wheels? Well, look no more! The ACF Team will use our Bicycle Algorithm of Love to match you to your future bike partner. Go ahead and delete Tinder from your phone - We've got you.
  • Atlanta Streets Alive: West Side: The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, organizers and founders of Atlanta Streets Alive (ASA), have again decided to hold ASA in tandem with the 2017 ACF. We're incredibly honored to work with ABC and have this event during the Festival.

And that's just a small preview - We've got a whole lot more up our jerseys...

Great! How Can I Help?

Thanks for asking! The ACF takes months of planning and an incredible staff to make it a reality.

Here are a few ways you can help us:

  1. Buy Swag - Support The Festival: Check out our ACF Store. All purchases help make the 2017 ACF a reality.

Our Step By Step Guide On How To Get Your Bike Ready For Spring

-
Our Step By Step Guide On How To Get Your Bike Ready For Spring

Spring is upon us and now's the time to get your bike ready for Atlanta's prime riding season. Since this winter has been particularly cold, there's a good chance you haven't been on your bike much. So when you do ride, you may hear all sorts of new, not so fun noises.

Fear not! We at the Atlanta Cycling Festival have some tips and tricks to get your bike ready and in shape for spring... and then the Atlanta Cycling Festival (Coming May 19-25)!

Step 1 - Make Sure You Have A Bike

This may sound ridiculous but bear with us.

In March 2015, Atlanta residents approved the $250 million Renew Atlanta Bond Program which authorized improvements, upgrades and repairs to infrastructure and transportation throughout Atlanta.

Thus, we've seen new bike lanes and infrastructure, helping to increase the number of new bike riders in the city. And, according to the 2017 City Of Atlanta Annual Bicycle Report, a lot more are on the way.

We postulate that many of folks will realize that spring is a great time experience life on two wheels and want to join the fun.

So, where's a good place to find a bike? We highly recommend:

Full disclosure - the above are sponsors of the ACF, but we're confident that you'll get an amazing bike and awesome service.

Step 2 - Wash That Bike

Dirt, grim and gunk are probably plentiful in your bike's drivetrain. And if you haven't biked in a few months, then all that junk is probably caked on.

The fix: Go get a bike wash kit. REI has a pretty great selection of tools and washes to get you started. Make sure that you dry your bike thoroughly to avoid rust.

Does washing your bike seem like a lot of work? Fear not yet again! The Atlanta Cycling Festival will have a bike wash station at Atlanta Streets Alive on Sunday, April 8th, from 2pm-6pm. Come enjoy DeKalb Ave like never before AND get your bike oh-so-clean.

Step 3 - Apply All The Bike Lubricant

After you've washed your bike, it will need to be heavily lubricated. There are a lot of bike lubricants out there, so talk with your local bike mechanic to see which they prefer.

Here's a quick video on how to lube like a pro.

Step 4 - Check All The Little Things

Your bike is clean and lubed! Hooray! Here's what you need to check next:

  • Check bike tube air pressure; pump if necessary
  • Check the spokes
  • Check brake levers
  • Check brake pads
  • Check derailleurs
  • Check chain

Step 4A - Realize That The Above Is A Lot Of Work And Take It To Bike Shop

We totally understand that doing all the above is a lot of work, so it may just be easier to take your bike to a bike shop for a spring tune up. Any of the shops listed in Step 1 are a wonderful choice for bike repairs/tune ups.

Don't have time to take your bike to the shop? Call VeloFix Atlanta. They'll come to you!

Step 5 - Get Out And Ride!

The moment of truth: Time to go for your first ride! Need some suggestions? Make sure you check out:

And there are many, many more. Once you start attending one group ride, you'll quickly find many more.

FEATURED SPONSOR

Atlanta Bicycle Crash Attorney

For the past 3 years, Bruce Hagen and his Atlanta Bike Law team have been huge partners and sponsors of the Atlanta Cycling Festival. Bruce and his team are avid cyclists, lovers of beer and incredibly active in the Atlanta bike community.

Each year about 50,000 Americans are injured, and approximately 500 killed, while simply riding their bicycles. And, despite the growth of the Atlanta BeltLine and other metro Atlanta bike plans, our region remains a dangerous one for bikers. Georgia drivers continue to be aggressive or inattentive to bicycles with which they share the roads.

If you're ever injured in a bike crash/wreck (And gosh golly we hope that you never are), we confidently recommend the personal injury attorneys at Bruce A. Hagen Law.

Preview Of Events - The Opening and Closing Bash

-

Holy guacamole! The 2018 Atlanta Cycling Festival is just a few weeks away.

Coming Saturday May 19 - Friday May 25, we at the ACF are in the final stages of narrowing down the 25-30 bike events during the week.

With so many fun events, it's hard to keep things super secret until our full calendar release in April. So, um, we won't! But don't tell anyone - it'll be our not-really-a-secret-but-TOTALLY-a-secret... secret.

So! With that, here's Preview #1 of two big events at the Atlanta Cycling Festival.

The Big Opening Bash (Saturday, May 19, 6-10pm)

Each year of the festival, we kick off our opening day with a big ol' party. We love parties.

With the help of the awesome folks at Sweet Auburn Works (SAW) and the Historic District Development Corporation (HDDC), we're activating the Water Tower Park in Sweet Auburn/O4W.

The oldest surviving water tower in Atlanta, the tower was built in 1906 as part of a state-of-the-art water suppression system for the cotton compress factory next door at what is now Studioplex. HDDC purchased the entire property in 1998, and have since been partners in redeveloping it into the exciting Beltline amenity it is today.

SAW has the wonderful task of reviving the inside and outside of the tower – with an interior mural and art depicting the history of the Old 4th Ward, and the amazing cultural and historical significance that the neighborhood holds.

During the party, there'll be a preview of the great stuff SAW and HDDC have in the works. In fact, $1 of Eventide beer sold at the event will go towards transforming the water tower into a focal point of the community.

We're also collaborating with The Spindle for beer, Chicomecóatl and Tinkertown Pies for food  and, of course, The Official Chip Of The 2018 Atlanta Cycling Festival - Symphony Chips - will be out in full salty force.

Combine this with lots bike vendors, bike orgs, bike businesses, bike demos and music and you've got an amazing Saturday night.

Old Water Tower Park

The Big Closing Bash/Relay 1 Year Anniversary Party (Friday, May 25, 6-10pm)

We mentioned that we love parties right? Well, hold on to your helmets, folks - this one is going to be big.

Thanks to the help of Newport US RE, we're closing South Broad Street (between Mitchell and MLK Jr. Drive) in South Downtown Atlanta.

ICYMI - Newport bought a significant chunk of historic South Downtown. According to Curbed Atlanta

"Major changes are in store for an eight-block section of South Downtown, as... Newport US RE begins to craft plans for its major reinvestment in the long-overlooked neighborhood.

Renderings released last month offered a glimpse of a utopian walkable district, peppered with restored historic buildings and connected by planted pedestrian plazas, the likes of which modern Atlanta has never seen."

AKA - amazing stuff.

So, how big is this party going to be? Behold: a summary, in bullet points and bolded text.

  • We'll have our Closing Bash: Eventide beer, bike vendors/orgs/demos, art and more.
  • Relay Bike Share will be celebrating their One Year Anniversary with us: They're working on a huge bike activation to celebrate their 1 year bday! Come learn about the bike share, try the bikes, get some swag and win all the prizes.
  • The night culminates with The Trails In Motion Mountain Bike Film Festival: Our BFF MTB Buddies at Zombie Camels are proud to host their first ever MTB film festival. Working with The Trails In Motion team, Zombie Camels is bringing this new community-driven film tour to Atlanta - expect a collection of the finest mountain biking films from around the world.

If the above doesn't get your heart racing like pedaling up a steep incline in the big ring, well, we're not sure what will.

We can't wait for May! To stay up to date, make sure we're connected with us to get all the info:

Pedal Pint & Paddle to the REI Boathouse

For the past 3 years, REI has been a pivotal sponsor of the Atlanta Cycling Festival. They've made far fetched ideas a reality (Remember when we launched a MTB course on a parking deck in 2016?) and been an incredible partner to help make each ACF the best it can be.

Not only that, but they've helped drastically increase and maintain Atlanta's MTB trails, awarded grants to incredible nonprofits (Park Pride, Georgia Conservancy, the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club and many others), sponsored Atlanta Streets Alive and now, from a corporate level, are initiating a robust sustainability standard for all their brands.

So! We're excited to announce that we're taking riders to their latest Georgia adventure: The REI Boathouse.

But how do you get ready to explore and experience Atlanta by bike? What a great question! We at the ACF have put our helmet-hair-heads together and created this handy list to make sure that you're ready for the week of biking fun!

How To Get Ready For The 2018 ACF

Behold: All the steps.

Step 1: Get A Bike

Sure, this may sound silly, but in order to enjoy a week of biking, you, well, need a bike. Here are some great options for you:

  1. Relay Bike Share: Relay has a silly amount of strategically placed and super useful hubs all around Atlanta. Also, during ACF, Relay will have "digital hubs" at all the partner bars so you can park the bikes there for no added charge! Also also! We've got a swanky promo code: acf2018. Get a Relay and come join us.
  2. Visit one of our sponsor bike shops: Great bikes + they help make Atlanta better by supporting the community? We love that. Here's our list:
  3. Come to our Bicycle Yard Sale: That's right - our 2nd Annual Bicycle Yard Sale on Saturday May 19th, 2pm, is a fantastic place to get a nice used bike at price that works for you. Bring your haggle pants - You'll need them.

Step 2: Download The Apps

This year, we're proud to feature two apps for ACF participants.

  1. Ride Report: Ride Report has partnered with the City Of Atlanta to help make  bicycle infrastructure decisions faster, smarter, and more responsive to cyclists' lived experiences. AKA - The app helps the city know what roads are great and which roads are not so great. During the ACF, the more you use the app, the more trophies you get. The trophies can then be "redeemed" at the closing party for ACF swag and beer. That's a win. Download it now
  2. ACF iOS Event AppDeveloped by the talented and regal Carlos Quinones (Our favorite biker developer), this app will give you detailed day-of info, help you plan your week and locate the next event! A must have for iOS users. Download it now.

Step 3: Follow Us!

How can you get breaking details and info on all the events during the week? Simple: Follow us on that ol' social media:

Step 4: View The Events And RSVP On Facebook

If you haven't yet, make sure you thoroughly, purposefully and vigoriously check out our 2018 ACF Calendar. Then, RSVP on Facebook for breaking details. Here are the links:

And there you go! All the details to get you primed and ready for ACF 2018. We'll see you Saturday, May 19 - Friday, May 25!
