We're Looking For Two Talented People For ACF 2016

-
The Atlanta Cycling Festival is a weeklong bicycle Festival, proudly made in Atlanta, Georgia.

Drawing inspiration from European bicycle festivals, the ACF took off the kickstand and shifted into the big ring in 2014, with the first ACF successfully pedaling into 2,000+ Atlanta cyclists’ hearts. Based on feedback and surveys, the ACF again pumped the tires and wheelied into another successful year in 2015, this time bringing out 3,000+ Atlanta cyclists.

Based (again) on feedback and success, we’re poised to #BikeATL for another successful year come 2016, all while staying true to our community and festival goals.

Broadly, though, the Atlanta Cycling Festival wants to become the SXSW for bikes in Atlanta: Where people take a week off work, travel to Atlanta to experience bike rides, bike art, bike tech, bike films, bike music and all things biking in the city that we love – Atlanta. (Note: We don’t make small goals here).

And that’s where we need help. Maybe your help.

We’ve got a lot of big things planned for the 2016 ACF, but in order to help achieve our goals, we’re looking for two key players. These positions are paid – We value your time and will pay for it, as much as we can.

Here are the two open positions:

*********************************
Bike Technology Director:
*********************************
With wearables, apps, alternative energy options and more, right now it’s a great time to be in tech. And we want to bring that to the ACF. For this position, you will be responsible for:
  • Concepting, organizing and realizing 2-4 bike technology events. Think bike tech hack night, powering an event only with bikes, wearables challenge, light-up the night with Bluetooth connected/synced bike lights… You get the idea.
  • Bringing in tech brands/businesses/ideas to help make these events happen. This will mean talking to people and helping them understand the vision of ACF, connecting the dots on why that’s important and then making the magic happen. A great thing to do, especially if you want to carve a niche for yourself in the bike tech world.
  • Other responsibilities: Attend all ACF meetings, work closely with festival director and ACF team, be in Atlanta and able to help/organize/lead events during the 2016 ACF.
  • Must haves: A bike/be a bicycle rider, work well in teams (collectively and independently), be able to delegate, able to manage people/volunteers, 100% honest/truthful, able to admit weaknesses and shortcomings, a positive attitude and a desire to positively change Atlanta through cycling.
  • Nice-to-haves: “Know how to talk tech” – Coding, programming, electronics, awesome “nerd” stuff like that, previous event experience, startup/tech connections.
  • Managing expectations: This is most assuredly a part-time, side-gig position. You will be paid for your work at the end of ACF 2016. Compensation is based on how well the ACF does. The more we, “make” the more we can, “give” – To you, to nonprofits, to the Atlanta cycling community.
  • Apply Here (application closes Sept 26th)
*********************************
Volunteer & Digital Resource Director:
*********************************
We’re looking for someone that loves, loves, loves (!) working with people. Someone who is also very detailed oriented, not afraid to pump out a well-organized Excel doc that is color-coded, alphabetized and easy to understand. For this position, you will be responsible for: Organizing Volunteers for ACF 2016:
  • Organizing Volunteers for ACF 2016: We will hold volunteer trainings and ride leader trainings, then assigning those people to events/nights/tasks for ACF.
  • Organize materials and routes for ACF 2016: One of the, “hardest” parts of this position is making sure all the routes, descriptions, needs and other digital items are given by event hosts.
  • Other responsibilities: Attend all ACF meetings, work closely with festival director and ACF team, be in Atlanta and able to help/organize/lead events during the 2016 ACF.
  • Must haves: A bike/be a bicycle rider, work well in teams, be able to delegate, able to manage people/volunteers, 100% honest/truthful, able to admit weaknesses and shortcomings, desire to change Atlanta through cycling.
  • Nice-to-haves: Previous event experience.

Interested? We’d love for you to apply. Our goal is to make these positions game-changers for you and ACF.

So! To get you ready for all the bike fun, we've put together this step-by-step guide! Follow it exactly and you're bound to have wonderful and memorable 2015 ACF.

Step 1: Watch The Promo Video
Our great friends at Tube Creative have put together yet another amazing promo video (check out the 2014 promo video). Discover what biking in Atlanta means to you at The Atlanta Cycling Festival!

2015 Atlanta Cycling Festival from tube on Vimeo.

Step 2: Get A Bike

If you haven't taken your bike out of storage in the last 9.29 years... chances are, you need a new bike. If you're lookin' for love on two wheels, we recommend the following fantastic bike shops:

Step 3: Tune-Up Your Bike
If you're set on that 9.29 year old bike... Well, then at least take it out and get it tuned up. You want it to be ready to roll. Please see the above shops. They do amazing wrench work. Or! Call Snyder Cycles Road Wrench - They'll come to you to fix your bike!

Step 4: Get All The Supplies
For a successful [and safe] Atlanta Cycling Festival, we recommend that you have these items with you at all times:

  • Helmet
  • Bike lock
  • Bike lights
  • Bike tubes
  • TONS of water (It's June, people - it will be hot)
  • A few snack bars
  • Charged phone

Also, since it's June, you will perspire. Like, probably buckets full. Proper clothing will help with this. Our favorite place to get the right (and super fly) attire: The Spindle ATL.

Step 5: Sport The Jersey
Another thing that will help with the heat: An awesome ACF jersey. Well, actually, it might do the opposite - because we're sure you're going to look hott in it < - - - Yes, two ts. Podiumwear put together these for us and we couldn't be happier with them!

Step 7: Clear Your Calendar
Again, we've got 40+ bike events from June 13th-June 20th. Clear your calendar. For the whole week.

  • Tour de BeltLine: This ride explores the current and future Atlanta BeltLine project on the completed sections of paved trails and nearby bike-friendly roads. Proceeds go to the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition and Atlanta BeltLine Partnership. Awesome orgs.
  • Easy Breezy Bike Part Art:  Learn from artist Catherine A. Moore how to take old bicycle rims and other bike parts and make some amazing, artistic BIKE CLOCKS!
  • "Bikes Vs Cars" - Georgia Premiere Documentary Screening! Atlanta VeloCity Magazine is proud to bring you this opportunity to take a broader look at the issues, challenges and obstacles that cities and towns across the globe face when striving to become bike-friendly.
  • Living Walls Bicycle Tour: The ACF is partnering with the Metro Atlanta Cycling Club to take you to see some of the best Living Walls Murals in Atlanta! Proceeds from the ride will go to making ACF and Living Walls 2016 a reality, as well as MACC's awesome cycling programs. A trifecta of great causes.

Did we mention that there are over 40+ biking events? Events to have fun at? If you honestly don't have a good time during June 13th-June 20th it's probably because you're dead inside... And you should see a happy doctor about that. Soon.

Phew! That's 9 Steps! We think you can handle it. We can't wait to ride with you!

Much Bike Love,
The Atlanta Cycling Festival Team

Here's How You Can Sponsor The 2015 Atlanta Cycling Festival

-

Sponsor The 2015 Atlanta Cycling Festival

We’re starting to get excited over here at The Atlanta Cycling Festival! Why? In less than 90 days, we’ll be kicking off the 2nd annual Festival. Last year, we had 2,000 + cyclists for the week and over 32 events all over the city. This year, there’s going to be more. A lot more. Think bike demos, more parties, chances to win some great gear, bike volunteering and bike business creation.

If you haven’t marked off June 13th – June 20th on your calendar, you need to do that, well, right now.

We have four Sponsorship Levels:

  • The Little Ring ($100)
  • The Big Ring ($250)
  • Drivetrain ($1,000)
  • The Whole Bike ($2,500)

With each of these levels comes some great perks. Our favorite is at the Big Ring and Drivetrain Level where you/your brand get to host a ride/event! Great exposure and access to your "market" - If that market is thousands of awesome cyclists that care about what they wear, eat, drink and their lovely city of Atlanta.

Read About The Sponsorship Levels

#2: Get Vendor/Booth Space At Our Opening and Closing Expo/Parties
The Festival is bookended by the Opening Bash and Closing Bash. We structure these parties to incorporate an "expo" like feel, where cyclists are exposed to bike vendors, bike companies, bike orgs and more. At both Bashes, you can sell you goods (clothes, gear, memberships, ride registration, etc) all while enjoying a New Belgium Beer.

The pricing is extremely low-barrier (we did this purposefully) - $45 for a 9'x9' space. If you're looking for great access to your target demographic, you want to be at both of these parties.

Got more questions? No problem! Email us at twowheelsgood {at} atlantacyclingfestival dot com.

See you in less than 90 days!

Get Your Tickets For These Events At The 2016 Atlanta Cycling Festival

-

From June 11 - June 18, 2016, the Atlanta Cycling Festival is bringing you a week of bicycle rides, classes, parties, art, tech, and more.

We did the math and we have 46+ bicycle events this year. Yes, we know - That's a lot. We want to encourage and get as many people out on bikes as possible (Read more about the ACF Goals here).

However, there are these pesky things called "costs" and "permit fees." Let's just say, it's not cheap to repurpose a parking deck into a bike-topia, nor is it easy-cash to host a bicycle night market and historic tours.

Thus, to help offset some of these costs and remain in good financial health  we're hosting a few paid events this year. By purchasing tickets to these events, you're actively saying, "Hey, keep this week of biking magic alive, please."

And with that, here's our list of, "Get Your Tickets For These Events At The 2016 Atlanta Cycling Festival!"

1. The Phoenix Tour

If you only purchase one ticket, it should be this. Join us Saturday, June 11, on this 17 mile ride as we discover where the Phoenix has soared and spread her wings over this great city. We'll travel around the SW, NW and SE Atlanta, exploring perhaps unfamiliar pockets of history, wonder and context.

  • You'll get an intimate, curated contextual tour
  • Learn about: Hidden flyovers, Dome construction view, subterranean streets, Snake Nation, The Gulch, Atlanta's #1 Most Champion Tree, jazz forests and so much more!
  • Lunch at Elliott Street Pub
  • Snacks from Clif Bars and Suja Juice
  • Curated taste testing of The Official Tortilla Chip Of The 2016 Atlanta Cycling Festival: Paqui
  • See and learn wonderful things about Atlanta that you may not have known of before

2. The Big Opening Party!

Join us on Saturday, June 11, as we re-purpose the top two stories of the Georgia Tech Hotel Parking Deck! That's right, we're turning a parking deck into a rad bicycle event space for one evening. This event is going to be, well, awesome. TICKETS ARE LIMITED. So get them fast.

We'll be activating:

3. Easy Breezy Bike Part Art - Bicycle Totem

On Monday, June 13, we will be using old bike saddles, handlebars, brake levers, and other bike parts donated by Starter Bikes and Sopo Bicycle Cooperative to create the bicycle totem!

Personalize your bike totem further by bringing an old bike seat or handlebar that you have shared many riding memories but no longer have a use for.  The class fee is $15 to cover art supplies and hardware (Get ticket here).  Additional donations to Starter Bikes and SOPO will be accepted.

Eventbrite - Easy Breezy Bike Part Art - Bicycle Totem

4. MTB & Brew at SweetWater Brewing & Sope Creek Trail System

What better way to spend a day? Join REI's professional mountain biking instructors for a day to remember. Meet at SweetWater Brewing Company and shuttle in the REI van to Sope Creek Trail System for a dynamic and scenic trail ride accompanied by expert guidance and instruction. High quality full-suspension Ghost Brand mountain bikes are also provided.

Beer + MTB + Bike Demos = Heaven. Get tickets here

And there you have it! Call to action: Get your tickets and please share this post! See you on two wheels very soon!

The weather is looking impeccable for most of the week! And by that we mean blisteringly hot. Bring all the water and layer on the sunscreen. Golden tans are great - Red peeling skin, not so much.

4. Weather Updates Via Social Media

There will probably be an afternoon thunderstorm or two, which is normal for this humid summer season. If we need to postpone or cancel an event, we'll update you on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Please check the pages/feeds for real time updates.

5. Support Partner Bars And Help ABC!

Monday through Thursday, rides will end/take you to our featured bar of the night. While there, make sure to purchase the featured New Belgium Beer - For each New Belgium Beer purchased, NB will give $1 to the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition. Hooray, bike advocacy!

2017 Atlanta Cycling Festival Dates Announced

-

We'll just get this out of the way:

The 4th Annual Atlanta Cycling Festival is proud to announce the official 2017 dates: Saturday, June 10 - Saturday, June 17.

As a friendly reminder of what you can expect, check out our 2016 Wrap Up Video from our fantastic videographer: Matthew Mammola

Never being satisfied with "let's just do the same thing again," the ACF team has been hard at work planning and scheming on how to make this year's Festival even better.

Here's a preview of a few ideas that we have planned:

  • Concrete Jungle Fruit Tree Exploration Explosion Expedition: While the name is a working title, we're elated to work with the awesome team at Concrete Jungle. This bike tour is one of a kind and will be full of surprises - And homemade plumb wine, we hear.
  • The Most Adorably Aggressive Children's Bicycle Race Of Doom: Again, working title (We're really good at these, right?), but we plan on hosting the most adorable and aggressive 4-10 yr bicycle race ever in Atlanta. Get your kids ready - There will be awesome prizes, snacks and juice boxes.
  • 2X The Ramps = 100X The Fun MTB Pump Track: We're stoked to have REI and Clif Bar as sponsors again this year. They'll be at several events, culminating with combining both of their MTB pump tracks. It's going to be marvelously large and fun to ride.
  • Bicycle Speed Dating: It's back! Looking for love on two wheels? Well, look no more! The ACF Team will use our Bicycle Algorithm of Love to match you to your future bike partner. Go ahead and delete Tinder from your phone - We've got you.
  • Atlanta Streets Alive: West Side: The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, organizers and founders of Atlanta Streets Alive (ASA), have again decided to hold ASA in tandem with the 2017 ACF. We're incredibly honored to work with ABC and have this event during the Festival.

And that's just a small preview - We've got a whole lot more up our jerseys...

Great! How Can I Help?

Thanks for asking! The ACF takes months of planning and an incredible staff to make it a reality.

Here are a few ways you can help us:

  1. Buy Swag - Support The Festival: Check out our ACF Store. All purchases help make the 2017 ACF a reality.
  2. Sponsor The Festival: We're still looking for local sponsors. Believe in the ACF? Then let's talk!
  3. Volunteer: We're already taking volunteers. Want to meet a lot of wonderful people and have a great time on a two wheels? Join us!
  4. Host A Ride Or Host An Event: We're building out our event calendar now. Have a great event idea? Let us know!

So, go ahead and request the week of June 10 - June 17 off. This Festival's going to be a blast.

Concrete Jungle is a collection of fruit and bike enthusiasts trying to make sure no apple (or any fruit for that matter) goes to waste. They find local fruit trees, pick the fruit and then donate the fruits of their labor to food banks, shelters and people in need.

And we’re hosting a fruit tree tour with them this Saturday, with a portion of the ticket proceeds going to their awesome efforts. Come explore Atlanta, see endemic fruit trees, eat fruit right off the tree and support a great cause!

5th Year Of The Atlanta Cycling Festival

-
Five Years of the Atlanta Cycling Festival

This year we're excited to celebrate 5 years of the Atlanta Cycling Festival. Let's take a ride down memory lane and check out some highlights from the past 5 years with 5 great events:

1. Opening Bash - 2014

2014 ACF Opening Party

Our first big party! We had digital bike races, bicycle jousting, our first bike vendor space, tons of New Belgium Beer and so much more. This was, by far, one of our most "nerve racking" events. We planned and planned and worked really hard to make it fantastic. When the set 7pm start time came around, we were (Needlessly) nervous that no one would show up. Well, we were very wrong! What an incredible night that was.

2. 2nd Annual Doughnut Ride - 2015

Doughnut Bike Ride Atlanta

We had such a great response to the first doughnut ride in 2014 that we brought it back in 2015. Filling up everyone with some amazing doughnuts, we also built some great community, got to go support some local doughnut shops along the way and even wear some tutus! The Doughnut Ride is now a staple in the Atlanta Cycling Festival event lineup.

Special thank you to David Kipp for making this event happen every year. He's an incredible ACF volunteer... who happens to really love doughnuts! Oh, and rumor has it that for 2018, this ride will visit 5+ doughnut shops. Our waistlines are already expanding.

3. One Ride to the Quick Release Bicycle Art Show - 2016

Atlanta Cycling Festival One RideAnother one of our staple rides is our annual One Ride, where we ask Atlanta bike rides/orgs to start a ride anywhere in city (like the spokes on a wheel) and come together at one central hub and ride together. In 2016, we had almost 300 riders join us, ending at Eventide Brewing for our first ever Quick Release Bicycle Art Show.

4. Bike Camping Trip - 2017

2017 ACF Bike CampingSince 2015, the ACF holds a fundraising Bike Camping Trip in April. It always sells out and is an incredible time - 32 miles on the Silver Comet Trail, followed by delicious food, beer, amazing people and so much more. This past year was one of our best yet... save for the rain that joined us on our return trip. No matter! Just look at those smiles after we returned to the trail head - the beer at the end may have aided in this.

5. This year celebrating 5 years - 2018

Five rears of the Atlanta Cycling FestivalAnd here we are! We're pedaling hard into our 5th year of the festival, coming to you Saturday, May 19 - Friday, May 25th. We can't wait. Make sure we're connected with us to get all the 2018 info:
